Olde English Bulldogge: dog food and breed profile

Olde English Bulldogge: Hundefutter und Rasseportrait

The Olde English Bulldogge is a medium-sized dog from the United States. The dog breed has not yet been recognized by the FCI.

The training of the strong animals, which are known to be stubborn, can be a challenge, especially for beginners. Nevertheless, the Olde English Bulldogge is a lovable four-legged friend that can be suitable as a family dog.

History of the Olde English Bulldogge

The origins of the Olde English Bulldogge date back to the early 1970s. The American David Leavitt wanted a dog that wasn't as overbred as the modern English bulldog, so he set out to create a breed modelled after the bulldogs of the early 19th century.

For this purpose he crossed the English Bulldog with the Bullmastiff and the American Bulldog. He always pursued the goal of ensuring optimal health for the animals in addition to the desired appearance and placidity.

Characteristics of the Olde English Bulldogge

The Olde English Bulldogge has a muscular build. Compared to the English bulldog, they have much longer legs. In addition, they have a longer nose and both their underbite and their formation of wrinkles are less pronounced.

Females reach a shoulder height of 40.5 to 48 centimetres with a weight of 22.5 to 32 kilos. Males weigh 27 to 36 kilos and are 43 to 51 centimetres tall.

The Olde English Bulldogge's coat is very short and smooth. It can have almost any colour. Only lilac, blue and black are undesirable. The nose of the animals should always be black and the tail straight and long.

Life expectancy of the Olde English Bulldogge

An Olde English Bulldogge that comes from a reputable breeder and is spared from serious dog diseases can reach an age of 14 to 15 years if it is well looked after.

Olde English Bulldogge personality and character

The Olde English Bulldogge is known for being headstrong. It is therefore not uncommon for the four-legged friends to simply ignore their owners from time to time and to make their own decisions. With consistent training, however, this trait can be easily managed, so that a relaxed everyday life with the Olde English Bulldogge can easily be achieved.

That being said, the breed is generally friendly and always in a good mood. They need a lot of affection and love getting attention from her human companions and being allowed to be near them. If you don't neglect the animal's training and you can live with the fact that they are not an absolutely obedient breed like Labradors for example, you will have a loyal and affectionate friend in an Olde English Bulldogge.

A well-behaved Olde English Bulldogge makes a good family pet, although small children should not be left unsupervised with the boisterous animals. They are usually welcoming and friendly towards strangers.

Meeting other dogs can occasionally prove problematic. This is mainly due to the fact that the Olde English Bulldogge is a little wilder than other dogs, which can quickly lead to insecurity especially in small and less robust dogs. Apart from that, they are not always friendly towards members of the same sex and sometimes behave very territorially when they meet.

The Olde English Bulldogge as a listed dangerous dog

In Germany, special requirements and restrictions apply to the keeping of so-called listed dogs, which the authorities classify as potentially dangerous. In addition to nationwide regulations, which are mainly limited to the import of certain breeds, most federal states also decide for themselves which dog breeds are classified as dangerous and which rules must be observed when keeping them.

However, the Olde English Bulldogge cannot easily be classified as a listed dog, as it has only been recognized by the UKC as an independent breed so far. In North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, the Olde English Bulldogge is classified as a dangerous breed if the appearance of the animal in question clearly resembles that of a pit bull.

Activities for the Olde English Bulldogge

In contrast to the English Bulldog, the Olde English Bulldogge is extremely lively and active. They are not endurance athletes that you can take with you to go cycling or jogging. Nevertheless, you should definitely plan enough time for joint activities with your four-legged friend.

In addition to long walks, the Olde English Bulldogge loves tugging games, for example, where they can grab and prove their strength. It is of course important that you keep the game in a controlled manner and that you can end it at any time.

Another activity that some Olde English Bulldogges get excited about is hidden object games. Dog sports such as dog dancing or agility, which require a high degree of mobility, are not suitable for keeping the sometimes boisterous four-legged friends busy.

Olde English Bulldogge diseases

Overall, the Olde English Bulldogge is a healthy breed. The original breeding goal was therefore definitely achieved. However, their impetuous behaviour means that cruciate ligament tears and other ligament injuries occur comparatively frequently.

Other dog diseases that can sometimes occur in the Olde English Bulldogge due to their hereditary factors are in particular patellar luxation and hip and elbow dysplasia.

In order to minimize the risk of such health problems, you should definitely avoid dubious suppliers when looking for your Olde English Bulldogge and instead turn to an experienced breeder who cares about the well-being of their animals.

Appropriate nutrition for the Olde English Bulldogge

As with all dogs, a balanced diet is crucial for the health and well-being of the Olde English Bulldogge, too. When it comes to the amount of food, it is particularly important to consider the weight, age and activity level of the animal.
